Christmas 1983

As I sat on the sofa looking out the window
at the softly falling snow, I felt a peace and a
joy that I had never felt before.

This past year of 1983 God had granted me
my dearest wish---to be a mother.
And He had given me not one child,
but TWO!

I looked down at the sweet baby at my breast,
who was contentedly nursing, and I thought
of the other sweet baby asleep in her crib.
How blessed I was!

I had married at age 23 and was now 40, so
I had had to wait 17 years to be a mother---
not by choice, though! Hamp and I had
wanted children for more than 16 years,
but I guess God had decided otherwise.

But these two sweet babies had fulfilled our
deepest longings, and we were now content,
with a bright future ahead of us.

Christmas 2012

This year, looking back over the past 29 years,
I feel a deep longing for those precious early days
when the future seemed so full of promise.

The first 8 years were so filled with joy
and discovery and awe! We little knew that the
next several years would plunge us into deep
despair as we struggled to understand what had
happened to our precious, loving little boy.

Years of troubled behavior and seizures led to
brain surgeries and frequent hospital stays,
and we still don't understand why God allowed
these calamities to befall Robbie and us.

When the new milennium dawned, there seemed to
be such wonderful hope, as Robbie was getting
better each day, and it seemed that the original
promises might be fulfillled, after all.

Then came the darkest day of our lives....
the day Robbie died.

In the years that followed that day, I have
come to accept that all of this was God's Plan,
though I still don't understand it.

But I know that my Robbie lives and is happy
in Jesus' loving care in heaven,
and I know that some glorious day I will
be with him again,
for all eternity.

And I am content.
